About the Composer: Laura Silva is a versatile musician with over 15 years of professional experience. She recently graduated with a Masters in Piano Performance and Pedagogy under the tutelage of Dr. Christopher Fisher at Ohio University, where she is continuing piano studies combined with research interests as a PhD student in the Interdisciplinary Arts program. She is the director of the Piano Ensembles Project at the Athens Community School of Music.
During her graduate studies at OU, Laura was a group piano instructor and a collaborative pianist for the University Singers and Choral Union. She served as a private piano instructor in the Athens Community Music School and as a collaborative pianist for college and graduate students. She instructed Piano Safari and Piano Ensemble classes at the ACMS Summer Music Camp Week and also assisted with the Ohio University Music Theater Summer Camp and the Ohio University Summer Piano Camp.
Three of her Elementary Piano Ensemble pieces are published by Piano Safari. She recently published the article “The Power of Piano Ensembles: Building Collaboration, Musicianship, and Community” for The Piano Magazine: Clavier Companion. She joined the Ohio University MTNA Chapter as Treasurer (2017-2018) and Vice-President (2018-2020). Her posters were presented at several MTNA symposia, state, and national conferences. Recently she presented a keyboard lab session at the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy (2019).
In her native city, Caracas, Laura taught piano at the Mozarteum Caracas School of Music, where she created the innovative Piano Ensembles project (2014) that she replicated in the US. She is a former principal pianist of the UNESCO awarded network “El Sistema”, and participated in multiple concerts and festivals in Venezuela as well as Europe, Asia, and the US under the baton of internationally known artists such as Gustavo Dudamel, Christian Vazquez, Diego Matheuz, Alberto Grau, and María Guinand.
Laura holds other degrees from the Juan Jose Landaeta Conservatory, Central University of Venezuela (Bachelor’s in Social Psychology) and a Master of Music from the Simon Bolivar University. Her piano mentors have been Christopher Fisher, Stephanie Wu, Manuel Laufer, Carlos Urbaneja, Elizabeth Guerrero and Abraham Abreu.
